Collagen Structure is like a Basket
I talk a lot about collagen and its structure but it might be a bit hard to visualise!
Imagine a basket weave. In young, healthy, undamaged skin this is how the collagen matrix is structured - strong, supportive and uniform. Just PERFECT and how I want it to be!
Wrinkles cause by broken Collagen Weave
In ageing skin some of the strings (or lots of the strings lol) in the weave formation have broken making the formation weak. It is not strong enough to hold the top layer of skin in place, there is sagging from weak spots in the weave. Where there are weaknesses in the weave, there are dips in the skin, these dips are our fine lines and wrinkles.
Scars are formed from collagen, just like healthy skin. When scarring occurs the collagen fibers cross link and misaligned principally in one direction.
Micro-needling can break up these old collagen formations and mismatched bundles of collagen and help to form a new collagen matrix in the form of the original basket weave of healthy skin.
Collagen structure strengthened with Micro-needling
This gives the support back to the top layer of skin, stretching it out, holding it up and popping out those fine lines and wrinkles.
Micro-needling can help treat both raised and sunken scars. keloid scars (identified by the fact they grow beyond the original area of the wound and do not lose colour or heal over time) are not treatable.
